This is a special supplement class presented by APA-The Engineered Wood Association.
1 Hour General Credit, FL DBPR CILB Course: 0613906
1 Hour General Credit, AIA FFFSAC-1HR-Web
Course Description:
Based on hundreds of job site observations and reviews, APA has assembled a list of the most common wood construction framing and sheathing challenges found in today’s wood frame construction. These errors can be avoided with the understanding of some key concepts about engineered wood products and additional attention to construction documents and specifications. This session will highlight examples of framing mistakes, reference why they are not in compliance with the Florida Building Code or best practices and provide practical solutions for avoiding these oversights in construction. Each example will provide solutions and best practice recommendations to help prevent squeaky floors, wavy walls or other issues that can result in callbacks, construction delays, failed inspections and additional costs for the builder.
Additional Learning Objectives:
· Understand how the material properties of wood can affect construction in order to resolve common framing challenges.
· Understand how the consistency of design and building practices can impact the quality of wood structures and how to use consistency to improve construction.
· Learn how moisture affects wood products and how to prevent some common challenges arising from moisture exposure.
Understand how wind or seismic forces impact the roof, walls, floors, foundation, and connections of a structure; the concept of a continuous load path; and its importance in structural integrity.
